Demand for khus curtains as power cuts & mercury soar in Prayagraj

Prayagraj: With rising temperatures and unscheduled power cuts, the demand for khus curtains has increased in city. Khus curtain makers in the old city are getting bulk orders expecting a brisk business this summer season. Scorching weather conditions have increased the demand for the traditional, eco-friendly cooling curtains, popularly known as ‘chatai'.
Despite the availability of coolers and air-conditioners on instalments, a section of customers still prefers to install khus curtains. The makers of these traditional curtains are preparing a variety of curtains made of different materials to cater to the demand. However, makers claim they are facing a shortage of quality bamboo this year. These curtains are made of bamboo and cloth, while the fancy mats are made of bamboo, cloth, coloured threads, and ‘chics' made of khus.
‘Chic' maker Kamal admitted, "Despite the easy availability of stylish coolers and air-conditioners on instalments in markets, khus curtains are still popular among customers.No doubt, ACs and coolers have affected our business, but power cuts have proved to be a boon for us." The demand for stylish khus curtains and mats is also helping vendors revive the traditional business. Due to soaring temperatures and frequent power cuts, a section of customers is preferring the age-old techniques of keeping their houses cool during summers. "We have a variety of mats with different price range and styles to cater to our customers," said Ashok, who is among the 25 families that earn their livelihood by making these curtains.
Khus is an aromatic grass that acts as a natural coolant. Khus screens, when sprinkled with water, keep hot winds at bay and keep the house cool. These screens also lend a pleasant fragrance to the house and act as natural aromatisers.With frequent power cuts people are also switching to khus curtains. "This summer, customers are back to the basics, and khus curtains fit the scheme of things beautifully," said Ashutosh Dwivedi, a customer. He said, "Khus curtains give a soothing look to the house from outside. Besides, khus curtains are also good for our health and environment."
